I’m in love with this little missal from 1550’s Denmark. It seems like an embroidery sampler, trying out different ‘stitches’ or styles of calligraphy on the page, a stream-of-consciousness bricolage of inks, writing styles, and embellishments…I dream of rotating the heart in my hands and reading every last passage, from the hurricane of verse on the right to the vertical notes in the margins. I love the idea of hearts having pages, and drawings, and quotes. Tattooed in different hands. Scribbling in the margins when the page gets too full. The hurricane-shaped poem threatening to wipe the rest of the sentiments off the page.
